Book review: Power of Habit

Reading The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business by Charles Duhigg changed my approach to Life & Career Coaching. Also, when struggling to change your life, "I need to alter some unhelpful habits" is a much better way to assess the situation than judging and shaming oneself for being a "bad person." (I include a copy of this book for all clients who sign on for my Platinum Coaching level of service.)

Dating Coaches: smiling happy woman

Book review: Superflirt

I've provide Dating Coaching with a few male clients recently who were good looking and terrific guys, but they were struggling with making connections with women. When I inquired about their approaches in social situations, it became clear that they were trying to hard to be good, sensitive men that they weren't flirting very well. Superflirt by Tracey Cox is an excellent primer for both men and women, complete with helpful pictures. And always remember, that flirting begins with a little bit of an eye contact and a smile!

My work as a Life & Career Coach has been informed by many sources. I've included references to links and books that you might find helpful.

Helpful websites

Here are some helpful links:

  • Authentic Happiness

This is the web site for the University of Pennsylvania Positive Psychology Center, where Dr. Martin Seligman is the director. Although the center offers a number of happiness-related questionnaires that you can take online, I particularly recommend the VIA Signature Strengths survey.

  • Joan Borysenko of Minding the Body, Mending the Mind

This web page provides more information and resources about working the mind-body connection for greater mental and physical health.

  • Benson-Henry Institute for Mind-Body Medicine

The institute runs excellent introductory training about mind-body approaches for clinicians, training for people wishing to create programs similar to the Benson-Henry Institute, and groups for people struggling with conditions that can be greatly helped with mind-body approaches—infertility, menopause, life-threatening illness, and more.

  • How to Stay Stressed

A funny, somewhat biting, and informative web page about how staying stressed just might be kinda paying off for most of us.

  • Social Workers: Help Starts Here

For some people, Life Coaching is not the best or most practical service. Use this link to search for providers of medical-based, insurance-accepting mental-health counseling.

Note: I am not aware of any insurance-accepting, medical-model counselors that have an approach that is close to mine. If you want to seek that out, you can use this web site to begin your search. I wish you the very best with your search!
